Congratulations to Our Health Sciences Colleagues on Their Recent Awards and Honors
- Michael W. Kalichman, PhD, adjunct professor of pathology and director of the UCSD Research Ethics Program, has been awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to support a new project, “Integrating Ethics Education: Capacity-Building Workshops for Science and Engineering.” This NSF-funded, multidisciplinary project will involve 15 universities nationwide and aims to improve ethics education by training faculty researchers through regional conferences to teach ethics in the context of the research environment.
- Kumar Sharma, MD, FAHA, professor of medicine and director of the Center for Renal Translational Medicine, received a $5.9 million grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).
- The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI San Diego) will be honoring two faculty members from our Department of Psychiatry at their annual Inspirational Awards Dinner this week (click here for details and tickets to the dinner):
Dilip V. Jeste, MD, Estelle and Edgar Levi Chair in Aging, Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Neurosciences, director of the Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging, and chief of the Geriatric Psychiatry Division, will be awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by NAMI San Diego for his numerous contributions to the field of mental health and medicine over the years.
Marc A. Schuckit, MD, Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and former director of the Alcohol and Drug Treatment Program at UC San Diego and the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System, will be awarded the Research Award by NAMI San Diego for his more-than-30-years worth of work on alcohol research and several investigations on the links between alcoholism and other mental illnesses, including depression, anxiety, and psychosis.
Telemedicine and International Health
Amanda Gosman, MD, will work with a team of international surgeons to perform pediatric craniofacial surgery at Hospital Infantil in Tijuana, Mexico. These surgeries will be broadcast live on October 29 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Room LL-154 of the Medical Education and Telemedicine Building, located at Gilman Drive and Osler Lane in La Jolla. Grants for HIV/AIDS Research
Developmental grants for HIV/AIDS research are available through the UC San Diego Center for AIDS Research (CFAR). To be eligible, you must possess a doctoral-level degree and have an academic appointment at or above the assistant professor level or equivalent at one of the CFAR member institutions. Moores Cancer Center Lecture: Fighting Cancer with Your Fork
Learn about the latest research on dietary factors that help protect you from cancer occurrence or recurrence on October 12 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Moores Cancer Center’s Room 2007 (on the second floor). Sixth Annual Frontiers of Clinical Investigation Symposium: Vascular Disease 2011
The UC San Diego Clinical and Translational Research Institute (CTRI) and Nature Medicine will present the Frontiers of Clinical Investigation Symposium “Vascular Disease 2011,” beginning on October 13 in the Estancia La Jolla Hotel. This three-day program includes multidisciplinary sessions and will explore innovative approaches to bridge laboratory investigation and clinical research in disorders affecting the vasculature, including cancer, inflammatory disease and cardiovascular disease.
